Technology

Modern technology, used with care.

We use shockwave, high-intensity laser and electrotherapy alongside hands-on treatment and exercise, to settle pain sooner so you can start rebuilding.

How we use it

Technology supports care. It does not replace it.

  • 01

    Assessment first

We only use a technology when your assessment shows it is likely to help, and we tell you why.

  • 02

Part of a plan, never the whole plan

Technology can ease pain and speed up the early stages. Lasting results come from movement and strength.

  • 03

    Safety checked every time

We screen for anything that makes a treatment unsuitable before we start, and adjust it as you go.

01 · Technology

Shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy sends short, strong sound-wave pulses into a painful area through a hand-held applicator. It is most useful for long-standing tendon and heel pain that has not settled with rest or exercise alone, where it helps calm pain so you can load the tissue again.

What it feels like
A firm, rapid tapping. It can be uncomfortable for a minute or two, and we adjust the strength so it stays tolerable. Each treatment takes around five to ten minutes.
A typical course
Usually three to six sessions, about a week apart, alongside a strengthening programme.

Often used for

  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Achilles and patellar tendon pain
  • Calcific shoulder tendinopathy
  • Pain on the outside of the hip

When we do not use it

  • Pregnancy
  • Blood-clotting disorders or blood-thinning medication
  • A steroid injection in the same area in the last six weeks
  • Over growth plates in children, infection or a tumour

We check this at your assessment. Tell us about any medical conditions or medicines.

02 · Technology

High-intensity laser therapy

High-intensity laser therapy uses a concentrated beam of light to reach deeper tissue than older, low-power lasers. We use it to ease pain and inflammation in the early stages of treatment, so movement and exercise feel more comfortable.

What it feels like
A gentle, spreading warmth. It is painless, and you and your physiotherapist both wear protective glasses. A treatment usually takes a few minutes per area.
A typical course
Often two to three sessions a week in the early phase, then tapered as you progress.

Often used for

  • Painful, inflamed tendons and muscles
  • Knee and other joint pain, including osteoarthritis
  • Acute back and neck pain
  • Sprains and strains

When we do not use it

  • Pregnancy (over the abdomen or lower back)
  • Over a known or suspected tumour
  • Over the eyes or the thyroid
  • Some medicines that make the skin sensitive to light

We check this at your assessment. Tell us about any medical conditions or medicines.

03 · Technology

Electrotherapy (TENS and IFT)

TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) and IFT (interferential therapy) use mild electrical currents through pads on the skin. They reduce pain signals for a while, which gives us a window to move and strengthen the area more comfortably.

What it feels like
A tingling or buzzing sensation that should never be painful. Sessions are usually 10 to 20 minutes, often combined with other treatment.
A typical course
Used as needed within a session. For some people we also show you how to use a TENS unit at home.

Often used for

  • Back and neck pain
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Muscle spasm
  • Pain in the early days after injury or surgery

When we do not use it

  • A pacemaker or other implanted electrical device
  • Pregnancy (over the abdomen or lower back)
  • Epilepsy (around the head and neck)
  • Broken skin or areas with reduced feeling

We check this at your assessment. Tell us about any medical conditions or medicines.

FAQ

Questions about our technology.

Is shockwave therapy painful?

It can be uncomfortable for a minute or two. It feels like a firm, rapid tapping, and we adjust the strength so it stays tolerable. Each treatment takes around five to ten minutes.

How many shockwave sessions will I need?

Usually three to six sessions, about a week apart, alongside a strengthening programme. We review your progress at each visit.

Is high-intensity laser therapy safe?

Yes, when it is used correctly. It is painless, you and your physiotherapist both wear protective glasses, and we check for anything that makes it unsuitable, such as pregnancy or a tumour in the area, before we start.

Will I have technology at every session?

Not necessarily. We only use shockwave, laser or electrotherapy when your assessment shows it is likely to help. Hands-on care and exercise are always the core of your plan.

Can technology replace exercise?

No. Technology can ease pain and help you start moving sooner, but lasting recovery comes from restoring movement and building strength.
